Winter Blooming

Since I've been absent from this blog so much this past autumn and winter, I have a lot of catching up to do. Here's another project that I haven't shared with you yet. I learned this technique from Linda Kemshall. She calls the technique 'hydrangea blooming' in an episode of Design Matters TV. I just had to try it. There are four layers of cotton in this hanging bag; three of which I've cut open on the grain, to produce maximum fraying. I like the way the frayed threads form stamens in the middle of the blooms.

Speaking of blooms, here's an image of an amaryllis I was given by some of my students at the end of term in early December. It bloomed just before Christmas, again after New Year, and now it has produced a third stem, which is very short, but with full-sized flowers. Amazing!

Here's a view of my neighbourhood this time of year. We had gorgeous winter weather at the start of the week, and I treated myself to some free light therapy. The snow catching the sunlight and frost on the tree branches was a sight for light-starved eyes.

Have a great week, and remember to drop by again soon! - Annika

  1. Annika, if you took your blue sky photo since Friday morning you can enter it into the Flickr Friday group with the theme this week: Beyond the Horizon. There are wonderful photos from all over the world. I put one into the pool this morning. Get in touch with me for details if you don't know about it.

    1. I took the photo on Monday or Tuesday, so I guess I can't add it then. But thanks for the tip! I might look into this Friday group, even though I don't consider myself a photographer. Or perhaps I already have enough on my plate... ;-)

  2. Your triangle bag is gorgeous! I hadn't thought of using that technique on the bags, but it looks so pretty. I am making one right now with a boro/kantha feel to it. My amaryllis are starting to bloom. I always plant them late so they bloom when it is gray and dreary. Three flower stalks is amazing! Have you ever tried to keep the bulbs over the summer? I tried the past two years and finally one old bulb sent up a lonely flower. I guess the growers have a magic touch. :) Have a wonderful week, my friend.

    1. Thanks Jeannie! Yes, I was very surprised when the third stalk peeked out. I'm going to keep the bulb alive and give it to my mum. Then we'll see whether her gardening skills will tempt it to bloom again. I hope you'll post images of your boro/kantha bag when it's finished. Have a splendid week, my friend. :)
