Thinking Outside the Box

A few weeks ago I endulged myself with a bit of box-making. I love small handmade boxes. There's something about the way they sit in your hand, and the way the lid slides perfectly in place with a little rasping sound.

This time I tried something new, and while I was in an explorative mood, I decided to stitch, or close, every side of the box and lid with a different method, just to see how it worked.

Here, the box is still without its lid:

In the last image, I've hidden the stiches under a fused strip of fabric.

Right now it's holding part of my big collection of notes on small slips of paper. I'm always writing to-do lists, taking notes and jotting down ideas on any piece of paper that happens to be nearby, and my surfaces quickly fill up with these papers. Now I have a safe place to put them until I have the time to file them properly. Yes, I know I should file them properly right away, instead of writing things on little pieces of paper, but... well... you know...

Pandoras nöje

Jag är väldigt förtjust i askar. Jag gillar att lyfta på locket och kika in, och ljudet och känslan när man sätter tillbaka locket på asken och det glider perfekt på plats med ett litet raspande ljud. Det bor nog en liten Pandora i mig...

Eftersom jag är så här förtjust i askar, tog det inte länge för mig att bestämma mig för att jag skulle delta i en kurs i asktillverkning vid Arbis den här helgen. Det var med tanke på den kursen som jag tillverkade tyget som jag skrev om för ett par veckor sedan.

Askarna vi lärde oss tillverka är gjorda av kartongbitar överklädda med papper eller tyg, och det var både lätt och svårt. Lätt, därför att tekniken, materialen och verktygen är enkla. Svårt, därför att man måste vara ytterst noggrann. Min första ask blev lite sned och vind, så den utnämndes till UFO och så tillverkade jag en ny ask med hjälp av mina nya insikter.


Pandora's delight

I'm in love with boxes. I love to lift their lids and peek inside, and I love the sound and feeling when I put the lid back on and it slides back in place perfectly with a little rasping sound. I believe there is a little Pandora in me...

Since I like boxes so much, it didn't take me long to make my mind up to sign up for a box making class this weekend. I was thinking of this class when I designed the fabric that I wrote about a couple of weeks ago.

The boxes we were taught to make are made of paper- or fabric-coated pieces of stiff cardboard, and it was both easy and difficult. Easy, because the technique, materials and tools are easy. Difficult, because you have to be very accurate. My first box was a little wonky, so I appointed it UFO, and made a new box with the help of my new insights.

Jag har aldrig bloggat förut, så det här blir ett intressant experiment. Borde förstås ägna mig åt andra och viktigare saker, men nu råkade det bara vara så att jag var på rätt humör för att inleda min bloggkarriär. ;-)
