Own Time

After a tough week I decided to enjoy a bit of own time with a simple embroidery project. Or two, in fact. Both are inspired by Japanese sashiko embroidery. Simple and relaxing.

I haven't decided what to do with this one yet. I'm just working on a piece of fabric that I coloured earlier, but that didn't work out as planned. I'm just improvising as I go. A mystery project!

This will be a dramatic skirt in black cotton sateen with red details. A long-term project, but I'm getting near the end now.

Have a great weekend! - Annika

  1. These are so beautiful. What sort of thread are you using (and how many strands?)

    1. Thanks Cheryl! In the first one (grayscale) I'm using perle cotton nr 5 (white) and 8 (black), one strand. Perle cotton nr 5 perhaps isn't the best choice, as the thread tends to untwist while I'm sewing, but it's ok. The red thread is coton a broder nr 25, and I use two strands in that project. I haven't been able to find real sashiko thread locally, unfortunately.

  2. Beautiful stitching, Annika. What would we do if we didn't create to center us? I love sashiko and your patterns are gorgeou. The sashiko thread I have that was imported from Japan is like a light kite string. You really can't see the twist. I think the pearle cotton would be a lovely substitue. It has a little sheen, while sashiko thread does not. Wishing you a less stressful and fun filled week.

    1. Thanks Jeannie! It's the end of term for the adult courses, so after this week I'll have a lot more time to do my own stuff. I'm looking forward to exploring new territory in fabric design. The kiddies' courses will go on for another month, though.
